Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)

Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.

Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors

From 19 April 2021, quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand will commence.

Known as green zone travel, it will enable the movement of people between the two countries in a way that is safe and ensures that public health requirements are met.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall


Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot. Currently there are no active hotspots (updated 19/05/21).

No Internal Travel Restrictions

There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • A high moving slowly across southeast Australia extends a ridge of high pressure over northeast Australia. This will cause a more humid easterly flow to develop across the north of the Territory for the next few days, while temperatures will slowly rise in the south.
  • ‘The Dry’ season has started running from May- Oct, but with La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Travel from all states into WA is now classified as ‘Very Low risk’.

Effective from 12.01am, Monday 19 April, based on the latest health advice and pending no further outbreaks:

  • WA Health has issued Tier 1 and Tier 2 advice for recently returned travellers from Victoria following a public health alert issued for parts of Melbourne. A Victorian list of exposure sites.
  • Travellers from New Zealand will be considered a very low risk jurisdiction and are able to enter WA without having to quarantine, but subject to strict conditions.

Very low risk states and territories

(No community cases in 28 days)

  • Not required to quarantine
  • Currently includes TAS, QLD, SA, ACT, VIC, NSW and NT.

Low risk states and territories

(Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)

  • Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
  • Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
  • Currently includes (N/A).

Medium risk states and territories

  • Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
  • No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
  • Covid tests required.
  • Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
  • Currently Includes (N/A).

Internal Travel Restrictions

Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

  • Kimberley:

    • A high pressure system is moving over eastern Australia, with east to southeast winds easing and a weak trough developing over the western Pilbara over the next few days.
    • Low/Moderate Fire risk.
    • Hot temps (High of low-mid 30s) expected.
    • Road Alert: Road Open to High Clearance 4WDs and trucks under 25t ONLY. Gibb River Rd from Mount Barnett to Pentecost River - Flooding (Updated: 19-05-21).
  • Pilbara: 

    • A high pressure system is moving over eastern Australia, with east to southeast winds easing and a weak trough developing over the western Pilbara over the next few days.
    • Fire Risk:
      -East Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      -West Pilbara Coast: Low-Moderate
      -East Pilbara Inland: Low-Moderate
      -Ashburton Inland: Low-Moderate
      -Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny throughout the week.
    • Road Flooded: Nanutarra Munjina Rd - Nameless Valley Dr and Bingarn Rd - Flooding (Updated: 19-05-21).
  • South West WA:

    • A trough will weaken early Wednesday over the southeast parts of the South West Land Division. A weak high pressure ridge develops over the south coast before a cold front reaches the SW corner late Friday. The cold front will move over the South West Land Division and adjacent parts during Saturday.
    • Fire Risk: Geographe: Low-Moderate
      Leeuwin: Low-Moderate
      Nelson: Low-Moderate
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.
    • Road Closed: South Coast Hwy between Cheyne Rd and Kojaneerup West Rd Green Range - Planned / Permitted Roadworks (Updated: 19-05-21).

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

    • Travellers are permitted to enter providing they have completed the Cross Border Travel Registration Form prior to entry into SA.
    • After 12:01 am, 7 May 2021, all people including Essential Travellers and SA residents who have been at a specified NSW COVID-19 case location listed on the NSW Gov website are subject to Level 6 travel restrictions and not permitted to enter SA. Exemptions can apply.
    • People who arrived in South Australia before 12:01 am on 7 May 2021, who were present in the New South Wales restricted zone are subject to Level 5 requirements.
  • People who arrived in South Australia before 12:23 pm on 12 May 2021, who were present in the Victoria tier 1 and/or 2 Public Exposure Sites, are subject to Level 5 requirements.
  • People who arrived in South Australia after 12:23 pm on 12 May 2021, who were present in the Victoria Public Exposure Sites, are subject to Level 6 travel restrictions and not permitted to enter South Australia.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

Travel within South Australia is unrestricted. People are free to visit regional areas.

Regional Update -

  • A high 1030 hPa over NSW will move over the Tasman Sea today. A trough of low pressure will move across the south and far west of SA on Thursday. Another high will move over Victoria late Thursday reaching the southern Tasman Sea by late Friday.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flooding (updated: 19/05/21).
  • North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Birdsville Track - Mungeranie to Marree 4WD only (updated: 19/05/21).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Victoria

Border Update -

No Interstate Restrictions
  • From 11 Jan 2021, All travellers will need to apply for a permit to enter Victoria from anywhere in Australia.?
  • Perth and Peel, WA LGAs have been declared Green Zones (as of: 10-05-21).

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system over eastern NSW will move over the Tasman Sea today. A cold front approaching Victoria from the west will weaken as it crosses southern districts during Thursday, with the high pressure system reasserting itself over the State by Thursday night. The high will move slowly eastward during Friday and Saturday.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures are coming into effect, with tracks to close from the long weekend in June 2021.
  • Alpine National Park: The following roads/tracks are subject to early seasonal road closures from 8 May 2021: Golden Ridge Track, Kelly Lane, King Spur Track, Long Spur Track, Shepherds Creek Track, Davies Plain Track, and Kings Plain Track.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions

Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas).
High risk areas include:

Regional Update -

  • A northwesterly stream across Tasmania will strengthen later today as a cold front approaches. The cold front will cross Tasmania during Thursday morning, then a high to the north will extend a ridge over the state. The high will move into the Tasman Sea on Friday afternoon and remain slow moving on Saturday, directing a northwesterly stream over Tasmania.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Dec 20 - Jul 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

No Interstate Restrictions

Travelers from other Australian States and Territories, who have not been overseas, may enter without applying for a permit (Excluding Greater Melbourne). Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots.
You must complete an NSW entry declaration form if you are entering NSW after 5pm on 27 April 2021, and in the previous 14 days have been in any hotspot suburbs.

No Internal Travel Restrictions

There is currently no limit on the distance that a person may travel, however NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system drifting over southeastern Australia is promoting mostly dry conditions, although cool mornings across New South Wales. This pattern will be briefly interrupted on Thursday by a cold front skimming across the south, before a new high becomes established in the region. The next significant cold front looks set to arrive mid next week.
  • Flood Closures reopening throughout the North West of state between Broken Hill - Wanaaring - and Cameron’s Corner - Exercise caution . (Updated: 05/05/21).

Queensland

Border Update -

      If you enter after 1am AEST 7 May 2021, you must quarantine in government arranged accommodation.
  • Victoria:
    Restrictions are in place for anyone who has been to a Victoria exposure venue during the exposure period for the venue.

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.

Regional Update -

  • A high over southeastern Australia extends a ridge over Queensland, with southeasterly trade winds and light stream showers along the east coast and relatively cool and dry conditions across the interior. The high will move east into the Tasman Sea on Wednesday and another high moving across the Bight will replace it later this week, maintaining the ridge over the state.
  • Cape York: Peninsula Developmental Road - at Archer River Road.
  • Fraser Island:

    • Planned bridge maintenance works on the Wanggoolba Creek vehicle bridge will be in progress from 8-19 May 2021. During this time the junction of Bennetts Road and Lake McKenzie Road, south to the Wanggoolba Road junction will be closed.
    • Most of the West coast is closed to beach driving (Updated 28/04/21).
    • Look and listen for aircraft landing and taking off along the eastern beach. Follow direction from the ground control crew.
  • South West QLD : Camerons Corner Road, Cameron Corner - Floods - Vehicle access is closed to all vehicles and will remain closed until further notice (updated: 10/05/21).
