Permits

National Park Passes

Entry to many of WA’s national parks – including Mirima, Purnululu, King Leopold Ranges, Tunnel Creek and Windjana in the Kimberley – is subject to a fee. DPaW (formerly DEC/ CALM) offers a range of passes from one day to 12 months. If you’re going to be visiting fee-charging parks in other regions of the state, it could be worth purchasing one to suit.

The best option for most visitors heading further afield would be either the Holiday Pass. Visit DPaW’s website for full details. Park passes can be purchased at DPaW offices, park entry points and selected tourist centres and shops.

Camping fees also apply in national parks and state forests.

Entering Aboriginal Land

A permit is required to enter most Aboriginal-owned lands in the Kimberley. Local tourist offices can advise on the requirements for places that allow entry by tourists (e.g. Kalumburu). If there’s any doubt, contact the Department of Aboriginal Affairs in either Broome (1 Short St, Ph (08) 9194 3400) or Kununurra (Coolibah Drive, Ph (08) 9166 5500).

Entry permits can be obtained by applying either in person at the above offices or online. Permits are free of charge.

Government Offices

The Department of Parks & Wildlife (DPaW) manages all national parks in the Kimberley. DPaW’ s regional office is in Kununurra (Ivanhoe Rd, Ph (08) 9168 4200), and there are offices in Broome (Herbert St, Ph (08) 9195 5500) and Derby (Ph (08) 9193 1411). Seasonal rangers are based at Geikie Gorge, Mitchell Falls, Purnululu National Park, Silent Grove (in the King Leopold Ranges Conservation Park) and Windjana Gorge.
