Australia

Border Update -

Closed to International Visitors (ex New Zealand)
  • Australia’s international borders are closed. Only Australian citizens, residents and immediate family members can travel to Australia.

Restrictions on New Zealand Visitors
  • From 19 April 2021, quarantine-free travel between Australia and New Zealand will commence.
  • The Travel Bubble is currently suspended (01/09/21)
  • Known as green zone travel, it will enable the movement of people between the two countries in a way that is safe and ensures that public health requirements are met.

La Nina -

The Bureau of Meteorology announced the beginning of a La Niña on the 29th September 2020, which most likely means a wet summer period for eastern and northern regions. 

La Niña is a recurring event in our weather cycle, not to be confused with the warmer El Niño, that operates over periods of one to eight years. It manifests when strong equatorial trade winds change ocean currents, drawing cool water up to the surface in parts of the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a pile up of warm surface water east of Australia. This leads to a boost in convection that has a pronounced effect on the global climate.

Every La Niña event is different, but according to the BOM this time Australia is likely to see:

  • More rainfall in Eastern, Central, and Northern Australia
  • Decreased daytime temperatures south of the tropics
  • More tropical cyclones
  • Increased chance of widespread flooding
  • Longer, less intense heat waves in south east of Australia
  • Earlier First Rains across Northern Australia
  • Less risk of fires in areas that receive more rainfall


Northern Territory

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • All arrivals to the Northern Territory must complete 14 days of supervised quarantine at your own expense, if you have recently been in an active declared COVID-19 hot spot. Currently, all LGAs in VIC, ACT and NSW are active hot spots (updated 01/09/21).
  • Travellers to the NT need a NT Border Entry Application
  • Travellers to NT from NSW, Greater Melbourne LGAs or ACT:
    -Entry is now strictly prohibited from current hotspots or public exposure sites without a prior approved exemption.
  • VIC:
    - All of Vic is currently an active hotspot.
  • Vaccination status: If a person is fully vaccinated they are still required to follow all test and quarantine directions.

No Internal Travel Restrictions
  • There are no internal restrictions although any non-residents wanting to go into a remote community must still follow all the requirements of land councils and local communities, including checking if you need a land council permit to go there.

Regional Update -

  • Humidity is increasing across the Top End this week as a ridge along the Queensland coast strengthens. Very warm conditions will develop in the south by the middle of the week as the next trough approaches from Western Australia. The trough will move through the NT late in the week and over the weekend, bringing significantly cooler temperatures and areas of rain to southern parts, as a strong high develops over southern Australia.
  • ‘The Dry’ season has started running from May- Oct, but with La Niña conditions, the weather is looking wetter than average over the next couple of months.

Western Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Before travelling to WA, complete a mandatory G2G PASS registration and declaration.
    Travellers from all states must look at the ‘State Risk Ratings’. NT, SA and TAS are classified as ‘Very Low Risk’. QLD is classified as ‘Low risk’, ACT and VIC are Classified as ‘Medium risk’ and NSW is classified as ‘Extreme Risk’.
  • WA has introduced a hard border with all states and territories (Excluding TAS, SA and NT) following the evolving COVID-19 situations and outbreak and you are not allowed to travel without an exemption.
  • Very low risk states and territories 
    (No community cases in 28 days)
    - Not required to quarantine
    - Currently includes: TAS, SA and NT*.
  • Low risk states and territories
    (Less than 5 community cases per day on a 14-day rolling average)
    - Must self-quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises
    - Must present for a COVID-19 test on Day 11 if still in WA
    - Currently includes: QLD.
  • Medium risk states and territories
    - Must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - No entry without an exemption through G2G PASS.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Must wear face masks until at an isolation location.
    - Currently Includes: VIC, ACT.
  • High risk states and territories
    - Travellers are not permitted to enter without an approval through G2G PASS.
    - if permitted to enter, travellers must self-quarantine/quarantine for 14 days in suitable premises.
    - Covid tests required.
    - Currently Includes: N/A.
  • Extreme risk states and territories
    - Travellers are not permitted to enter without an exemption.
  • Currently Includes: NSW.

  • Travel is now permitted throughout all regions within WA, except for entry into remote Aboriginal communities.

    • A broad trough lies over the inland Pilbara and Kimberley, moving eastwards on Thursday and Friday as a new ridge develops over southern parts of the State.

    • Warm temps (reaching high 30s) expected.

  • Pilbara: 

    • A broad trough lies over the inland Pilbara and Kimberley, moving eastwards on Thursday and Friday as a new ridge develops over southern parts of the State.
    • Fire Risk:

      • East Pilbara Coast: High
      • West Pilbara Coast: High
      • East Pilbara Inland: High
      • Ashburton Inland: High
      • Exmouth Gulf Coast: Low-Moderate
    • Mostly sunny throughout the week, into the mid 20s to low 30s.
    • Road Flooded: Nanutarra Munjina Rd - Nameless Valley Dr and Bingarn Rd - Flooding - Open with Extreme Caution - 4WDs Only -  (Updated: 21-07-21).
  • South West WA:

    • A cold front will move over southern parts of the state from this morning with a very cold airmass to follow Wednesday evening and through Thursday. A ridge then develops over southern parts of the State on Friday in its wake.
    • Fire Risk:

      • Geographe: Low-Moderate
      • Leeuwin: Low-Moderate
      • Nelson: Low-Moderate
    • Quite extensive road works being undertaken on the South Coast Highway over October and November.
    • Road Closed: Muir Hwy closed at the Kent River Bridge, Perillup - Flooding. Road to remain CLOSED to all vehicles, Repairs to the side track are progressing. Detour available.

South Australia

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travellers are permitted to enter providing they have completed the Cross Border Travel Registration Form prior to entry into SA.
  • Border restrictions are in place. From 16 August 2021, any person arriving in South Australia who has been in NSW, ACT or VIC is currently prohibited from entering SA - Exceptions apply.

La Niña -

More rainfall during spring and summer, wetter soils and an increased chance of flash floods. Reduced bushfire risk with reduced extreme heat waves. More rainfall expected in the north/central areas of South Australia.

Regional Update -

  • A ridge of high pressure lies over the north of the State. Conditions will be warm to hot and windy throughout on Thursday with strengthening northerly winds ahead of a vigorous cold front which will move over the west of the State then reach central districts later. The front will move over eastern districts on Friday and a trough will move over southern coasts later in the day. A high pressure system will move over the Bight over the weekend.
  • Birdsville Inside Track Closed due to flood damage (updated: 01/09/21).
  • North East of state - Floods update, Most tracks have reopened. Cordillo Downs Road - Arrabury turn off to SA/QLD Border, Open to 4WD and Heavy Vehicles (updated: 18/08/21).
  • Road Works: Road Sealing - Strzelecki Track (472km). The SA government will seal the first 50-kilometres, Starting just north of Lyndhurst (until late 2021).

Victoria

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • From 11:59pm on 26 February 2021, you will need to apply for a permit to enter Victoria from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand.?Apply for a permit at the Service Victoria?website.
  • NSW and ACT is now a ‘Extreme Risk Zone’ under Victoria’s Travel Permit System.
  • Greater Darwin (NT) and Katherine(NT) LGAs are now an Orange Zone.
  • Greater Brisbane LGAs have been downgraded to a Green Zone.

No Internal Travel Restrictions
  • Until the end of September (70% population - one dose Covid Vaccination), Metropolitan Melbourne is under lockdown and heavy restrictions apply including a maximum of 5km from residences travel restriction (exemptions can apply).
  • Restrictions in regional Victoria have increased, There is a 5km limit on the distance they can travel from home.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure system over the Tasman Sea will extend a ridge across Victoria developing a northerly stream over the State today, that will freshen on Thursday as a cold front moves over the Bight. The front that will begin to cross Victoria on Friday, then clear eastern parts early Saturday as a high builds over the Bight.
  • Haunted Stream Track: Haunted Stream Track - Tambo Crossing is closed. DELWP are undertaking repairs. Reopening will be dependent on weather conditions.
  • High Country: Seasonal Closures are in effect, Check the list of tracks to close from the 17th June 2021.

Tasmania

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travellers who have only spent time in a low-risk area in the 14 days before arriving in Tasmania do not need to quarantine when they arrive, (excluding the high-risk areas).
  • Low-risk:
    - NT*, QLD, SA*, WA*
  • Medium Risk:
    - (N/A)
  • High Risk:
    - ACT, NSW, VIC, NT*, SA*,WA*
    *= a number of premises have also been declared as high-risk

Regional Update -

  • A high will form over the Tasman Sea today, shifting winds northerly over Tasmania. Warm conditions are expected across Tasmania on Thursday as the northerly winds strengthen again ahead of an approaching cold front, expected to cross the State on Friday. A colder southwesterly airstream is expected on Saturday with a ridge to extend from the Bight.
  • Upgrading the Bruny Island Ferry Terminals. Construction of a second ferry berth to take place Dec 20 - Jul 21.

New South Wales/ ACT

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Travelers from VIC and ACT are not allowed to enter into NSW. Guidelines in place for travellers from interstate hotspots. Updated 01-09-21
  • You must complete an NSW entry declaration form if you are entering NSW after 5pm on 27 April 2021, and in the previous 14 days have been in any interstate hotspot suburbs.

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • There is currently a 10km limit on the distance that a person may travel in Sydney, NSW Health recommends non-essential domestic travel should be avoided. 
  • Stay-at-home orders are in place across the state of NSW until 10 September 2021.

Regional Update - 

  • A high pressure ridge over the north of the state will be the dominant influence over the next couple of days, promoting warm and generally stable conditions through the week. During Friday, a trough will approach from the west and then sweep across the state during the weekend.
  • Flood Closures reopening throughout the North West of state between Broken Hill - Wanaaring - and Cameron’s Corner - Exercise caution - some closures in place. (Updated: 25/08/21).

Queensland

Border Update -

Interstate Restrictions
  • Interstate restrictions are in place. All travellers must complete a Queensland entry pass to enter Queensland from anywhere in Australia or New Zealand
  • From 23/07/21, NSW, ACT, JBT and VIC are COVID-19 hotspots. (Updated:25/08/21).

Internal Travel Restrictions
  • No restrictions on internal state travel.

La Niña -

More tropical Cyclones than normal. Prepare earlier - Rain expected a month earlier, more than 70% chance of above-average rainfall and increased flood risk.

Regional Update -

  • A large high southeast of New Zealand extends a strengthening ridge over the east of the state. A lingering trough over the central and northern interior will contract to the west of the state by Thursday and weaken. A new trough will move into the far southwest late Friday and on Saturday, and move eastwards across the state later in the weekend, pushing off the east coast early next week.
  • Cape York: Peninsula Developmental Road - at Archer River Road.
  • Fraser Island:

    • Areas of concern - Eurong beachfront, Eli Creek, Maheno, Lake McKenzie, Waddy Point beachfront Wathumba and Orchid Beach. Due to increased human-wongari interactions, extra vigilance is required in these areas.
    • Most of the West coast is closed to beach driving.
    • Look and listen for aircraft landing and taking off along the eastern beach. Follow direction from the ground control crew.
    • Planned burns: QPWS rangers will conduct planned burns in the K’gari (Fraser Island) Recreation Area from April until September 2021.
